Ship Island

We had a few days off of school so some friends and all of our kids took a drive over to the Mississippi gulf coast to play in the sand and water. Unfortunately, it was a cool day so the sand was a bigger hit. The kids like playing in some of the tide pools and catching fish. My friend brought these tents and they used them as a clubhouse, they had so much fun. The sand here is still not nearly as nice as Florida, but so much prettier than Galveston. We went out to one of the barrier islands off of the Biloxi coast. It was badly damaged by Katrina and Gustav. It has a fort on it that has withstood many hurricanes, but the historic lighthouse was wiped out. The island is and hour boat ride from Biloxi so it it very important in protecting the mainlands from future hurricanes. Most of the barrier islands of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana are either gone or significantly smaller hence the reason the hurricanes are so much stronger when they make landfall.
